This works with keyboards only: Hold down option/Alt key and click an object in the palette on the left, then click on the scene to the right to add the object to the scene. To remove an object, option/Alt click on the object. You can add and remove multiple objects.

Now, simple click on the small squares inside the big objects displayed in the scene to see what happens.
